Gender Taiwan Film Screening event

Host: SOAS Taiwan Society

Time: 1400–1730

The event of Gender Taiwan Film Screening hosted by SOAS Taiwan Society is successfully completed. By watching the “Girlfriend and Boyfriend” directed by Yang Ya-Che(2012) together, we had a wonderful and intellectual Monday afternoon in reading week at SOAS.

This event is aiming for understanding the implications between gender and politics in contemporary Taiwan. In addition, for more information regarding this film, we arrange a group discussion after screening and invite Shiang-Yao(she/her), who is current postgraduate student in MA Taiwan Studies at SOAS, have a talk to contextualise the film for all audiences.

Shiang-Yao gives a vivid depiction in terms of this period of taiwan with three classification on time, which are “The authoritarian era under martial law 1949–1987”, “Wild Lily student movement 1990 and “ Same-sex marriage legalisation 2017”.

Besides, I was moved while Shiang-Yao sharing the daily gender struggling regarding the poem, “As a girl graduated from boy’s school” based on her personal reflection.

Most importantly, I very appreciate for our lovely society officers co-organising this successful event, Yan, Chun, Yu-jun, Yi-Chun and Ting-Sian. Honour am I to work with all of you. :)
